According to star Sam Neill, JurassicWorldDominion's action differs greatly from the slow-burn approach found in Spielberg's Jurassic Park: 'I have never seen action like this.'
Sam Neill explains how Jurassic World Dominion's non-stop action differs from Steven Spielberg's slow-burn pacing on the original Jurassic Park. Neill first starred as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, Spielberg's masterful adaptation of Michael Crichton's 1990 novel of the same name. The 1997 sequel, The Lost World , was not nearly as well-received as the first, nor did it star Neill, focusing on Jeff Goldblum's charismatic mathematician, Dr. Ian Malcolm.
Neill returned to the franchise as the lead in 2001's Jurassic Park III, which saw Joe Johnston take over for Spielberg as director. Now, the original Jurassic Park trio of Neill, Goldblum, and Laura Dern will return in one of the biggest blockbusters of this summer, Jurassic World Dominion.
I have never seen action like this. An audience 30 years later wouldn’t find that pace acceptable. As a result this has action from the moment the lights go down. Though of course it has quiet moments. The Irish-born actor is absolutely on point about the major difference between Jurassic Park's approach to action compared to its various sequels, namely Dominion. In the 1993 original, Spielberg spends about 45 minutes meticulously setting up the horrifying reveal of the Tyrannosaurus rex. Compare this to 2022's Dominion, which begins with a dinosaur set piece and is nearly nonstop action from the moment it starts.
This stark difference in action can be attributed to Jurassic Park being the first film in the series and therefore tasked with a heavy amount of exposition and world-building, even if Spielberg wasn't aware of it at the time. On the other hand, Jurassic World Dominion is the conclusion to a decades-long saga and is therefore expected to be an action-packed spectacle. However, it also represents a larger shift in cinema that has occurred over the years.
