Defense lawyers aren’t disputing Jaime Jaramillo shot Richard Houston II, but they argue he might not have known Houston was an officer.
Jaime Jaramillo entered the courtroom during his capital murder trial at the Frank Crowley Courts Building on Tuesday in Dallas. Jaramillo is accused of fatally shooting Mesquite police Officer Richard Lee Houston II while responding to an altercation outside an Albertsons in December 2021. “I said I was sorry for what my dad did and I’d get him help and to ‘keep breathing,’” Yatziry Jaramillo said.Prosecutor Jason Hermus said in opening arguments that Houston was hit three times; once below his left chest but his vest stopped the bullet from penetrating his skin, once in a leg, fracturing bone, and once near his collar bone. That bullet penetrated his heart and lungs and exited his lower back, Hermus said.

She kneels down beside the officer before running to her dad. The young woman then stood between them, looking from the officer to her father.
