Oakland natives Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal unpack the show's best Easter eggs.
Ashley Rose, played by Jasmine Cephas Jones, turns away from her car for a microsecond while preparing for her son’s birthday party in Berkeley’s Tilden Park when the glass is heard shattering off-screen. “They didn’t even take anything,” she groans, punctuating the scene with the type of cynical humor that countless Bay Area residents have developed as a coping mechanism for this all-too-common situation.
“Blindspotting” began as a 2018 movie written by and starring Bay Area natives and longtime friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, who spoke with SFGATE about the evolution of the project over Zoom. The Oakland-based film, which centered on struggles with gentrification and police violence, performed modestly at the box office but received a boost when Barack Obama listed it as one of his favorite films of the year.
Season 2, which premieres April 14, focuses on how Ashley Rose, her young son and the rest of their extended family cope with the incarceration of Casal’s character, Miles Turner, who is serving a five-year sentence in San Quentin on questionable drug charges. Despite this tragic circumstance, hilariously bizarre scenes interspersed between more serious matters keep the show from feeling like a downer.
