Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri has been killed in a US drone strike, representing the most significant blow to the Islamic extremist network sinceThe US announced on Monday night that al-Zawahri had been killed at a safe house in the Afghan capital of Kabul over the weekend, putting an end to a years-long search for the Egyptian doctor who helped plot the September 11 attacks.
The success of the operation represents a crucial victory for the US, and also comes one year after its botched withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and the Taliban’s subsequent takeover of Kabul. US officials had suspected he was hiding out in Pakistan, but his return to Kabul - where he was living in a safe house with his family for months - raises questions about the Taliban’s commitment to keeping al-Qaeda out of the country.
Al-Zawahri was killed on the balcony of the safe house in Kabul at 9.48pm Saturday night . Senior officials discovered he was at the safe house earlier this year, prompting a small number of key intelligence agencies to start planning the highly guarded counter-terrorism operation.
