John Daly tees off on the 12th hole during the first round of the Insperity Invitational golf tournament, Friday, April, 28, 2023 in The Woodlands.THE WOODLANDS — There is not much the Tournament Course can offer up that Justin Leonard has not seen. The PGA Tour Champions rookie is making his first appearance in the Insperity Invitational. But the 12-time PGA Tour winner played here on the main tour as well as in college tournaments.
David Toms, a two-time winner this year, and Matt Gogel, are in a tie for fourth, one shot back at 5 under. Forty-one players broke par in the 54-hole tournament that concludes on Sunday. “You just have to play well against guys that are used to winning on the Champions Tour that feel confident in what they're doing. It's always a good field in Houston.”
“I've been struggling with getting off to better starts,” Leonard said. “Today was good. I didn't feel great about my game this week, the last couple days. I haven't hit it as well. Maybe lower expectations might have helped.”“You can move both ways off the tees, and greens are small,” Leonard said. “The areas where you're trying to hit it to are pretty small. I've played a lot of golf, college golf, early Houston Opens, so a lot of familiarity around this place.
