Sky News contributor Justin Smith has released his third book titled ‘Good as Gold’ – an Australian “western” fiction which rewrites the first Melbourne Cup in 1861. “It’s huge, 1861 – we were ten years after the first gold strike and before that we were cutting down redgum, sawing it up and making bark huts,” Mr Smith told Sky News Australia. “Then gold came along … it just completely changed. At that point we had a lot of money and we thought, how are we going to make Melbourne big – so we put up a big purse and said we’d have one of the biggest horse races in the world. “The turf club and jockey club back then were sort of vying for who’s going to be big in the sport in Melbourne – it was just a really exciting time.”
