While the existence of debris disks around neutron stars from the explosive remnants of supernovae is well-documented, the formation of disks around white dwarfs has been unknown.
The revelation that a small percent of white dwarfs emit infrared emissions is a significant clue, hinting at the existence of surrounding material. But, the cosmic veil over the scientific community is beginning to lift, all thanks to the groundbreaking observations made by the James Webb Space Telescope , reportsEnter WD 0145+234, a white dwarf star thrust into the cosmic spotlight. In 2018, this star experienced a remarkable infrared outburst, signaling the possible fragmentation of an asteroid or comet in orbit around the star.
The spectral observations obtained through the JWST reveal the presence of silicate grains within the debris disk, a direct result of collision remnants.
