Now in her fourth season with FSU_Softball, Kaley Mudge has played an integral role in their route to the 2023 WCWS. Jaynabardahl on Mudge’s busy offseason and unfinished business that has led to this postseason run:
looked satisfying on that June evening two years ago, but Mudge noticed something else she didn’t expect.“Wait … what?” she thought. Mudge didn’t even know she was close to 13 hits, the most in a Women’s College World Series. But now, in her first WCWS appearance, she was knocking on the door of breaking it.
“I remember feeling like a little kid on a playground,” Mudge said. “I was just so excited to be on that field, and that week was definitely the best week of my life. Aside from making it to the national championship and breaking the record, I just remember all of the memories with my teammates and coaches and all the fun we had on and off the field.”
“Now you’re on another level, and the expectation from the world is to do what you just did on the biggest stage,” Florida State coach Lonni Alameda said.She played in 23 games in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, starting four in the outfield and finishing with a .217 batting average. The numbers weren’t peculiar for a freshman finding her footing on a new team, but Alameda said Mudge was “quiet” as she navigated her transition.
The growing pains carried over to her second year. Mudge made strides mentally and physically while isolated during the pandemic, but she still had something to prove when she returned. Over the first three months of the 2021 season, she had just seven hits, appearing in most games as a defensive specialist while she battled for a starting spot.
