Polls put Kamala Harris slightly ahead of Donald Trump in the US election race. But there are two potential stumbling blocks that could up-end the contest once again.

As Kamala Harris accepted her party's nomination for president last week, there was a palpable sense of optimism in the 20,000-strong assembled crowd of Democratic supporters.

With the convention done, Harris has that most enviable ingredient on her side as she hurtles towards election day: momentum. But while the remarkably long honeymoon of the Democratic nominee continues, there are two clear potential stumbling blocks that may well derail her campaign. It might seem like a distant memory to some but just a few weeks ago, markets were in full panic mode.

While markets have recovered in the interim, there are still concerns that there could be a hard landing around the corner. Although it never meant that Harris was solely in charge of managing border security, it was always a fraught assignment and as numbers surged, Harris was an easy target for ridicule and blame., when she was pushed on why she hadn't visited the border in the role. She bizarrely responded: "And I haven't been to Europe and I mean, I don't understand the point that you're making. I'm not discounting the importance of the border.

Biden accused him of playing spoiler because he was worried it would neutralise the issue politically for Democrats. In December 2023 alone, there were nearly 250,000 encounters with migrants crossing into the United States from Mexico. The administration started referring to it as a crisis and was desperate for a solution.

The numbers have dropped significantly since then. The most recent data from US Customs and Border Protection show encounters at less than 60,000 in July, which is the lowest recorded since September 2020.
