The naming of a preliminary Kangaroos squad for the World Cup has been delayed until after State of Origin so coaches Brad Fittler and Billy Slater can avoid unprecedented selection debates in the middle of the series.
It would have brought about the unusual scenario of the NSW and Queensland coaches sitting down together during an Origin series as both plot the downfall of the rival state. Fittler and Slater were dramatically made new Kangaroos selectors on the eve of the Origin series, and will help choose the final 24-man travelling party, along with Meninga.ARLC chairman Peter V’landys will take over as chairman of selectors in line with a decade-old clause in the game’s constitution. V’landys will settle any selection deadlocks with a casting vote.
