Senior Liberals are backing former treasurer Josh Frydenberg to return to federal parliament, sparking fury about a move to dump Kooyong’s chosen candidate.
Senior Liberals are backing former treasurer Josh Frydenberg to return to federal parliament by running for the blue-ribbon seat of Kooyong against independent member Monique Ryan, sparking fury within the party about a move to dump chosen candidate Amelia Hamer.
“Josh Frydenberg, in my view, is someone we need to bring back into the Liberal Party and into federal politics,” Andrews told this masthead on Sunday. Her supporters are furious at the attempts to draft Frydenberg and overturn the vote by party members by holding a new preselection because the electorate’s borders were changed in a draft decision by the Australian Electoral Commission on Friday.
Mortlock, who founded advocacy group Hilma’s Network to encourage Liberal women, said Hamer was the sort of candidate the party needed to bring women and others back to the Liberals after several prominent Liberal men lost their seats at the last election. The AEC draft decision on Friday, which could be challenged by political parties before being finalised in coming months, moved about 30,000 voters from Liberal strongholds such as Armadale, Toorak and Malvern into the electorate of Kooyong.
