Two sisters describe their unbreakable bond after life-saving kidney transplant surgery.
Kate Harper reflects on the unbreakable bond she has with her "perfect match" — her sister Nikki, who is her kidney donor.
"We have always been close and this has just made us even closer, if that's even possible," Ms Harper said.It was the second time Ms Harper received a kidney from a donor, after being diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease in both organs before she was born. The donated kidney lasted almost three decades before Ms Harper was told she needed another transplant in 2022.It was during those few months Ms Harper set a goal to compete in the World Transplant Games, which celebrates the lives of donors and recipients through sport.The 35-year-old has since qualified for the 2025 world games, after taking home seven medals in the Australian Transplant Games earlier this month.
Chief executive officer Chris Thomas said while 80 to 90 per cent of the population believed in organ donation, only 36 per cent of Australians were registered organ and tissue donors, with misconceptions surrounding transplants."If you've taken the time to register and you've informed your family, in the vast majority of circumstances your family will honour that decision," he said.
