EXCLUSIVE: We're turning our focus on the royals’ long-held love of photography, from the late Queen's 'innate understanding of the craft' to Kate Middleton's family portraits
They may be the most photographed family in the world, but many members of the British monarchy also display passion and talent on the other side of the camera. The Princess of Wales is the most acclaimed royal snapper of all, having become known for sharing beautiful, close-up pictures of her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Royal photographer Samir Hussein has been taking pictures of the family for years. He says, “It’s really smart of Kate and William to provide images of their children in this way, because it satisfies the huge public interest in their lives, while allowing them the privacy they need. In this special edition of OK!, we take a closer look at The Princess of Wales' personal portfolio of pictures, and discover how this very modern monarchy is mastering the art of social media and cutting-edge videography. We also explore some of the most iconic images taken of the royals, and focus on those who have spent decades immortalising their lives.
Samir, who worked with the Queen for many years, tells us she had an innate understanding of the craft. “She really appreciated and understood the power of photography,” he says. “She recognised how it can shape people’s view of you. She would always help us photographers get a good picture of her.” As Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, he also took many memorable images of the monarch and Philip, as well as Margaret. “It’s hard to quantify how important those images still are in reflecting former times,” says Samir. “In many ways, these photographers brought a more relaxed and informal side to the art of royal photography, and that style has always influenced my own work.”
While Rankin is also known for his striking images of A-list celebrities and musicians including Mick Jagger, Madonna and Kylie Minogue, working with the royals is perhaps what he has found most rewarding of all. “The family are collaborative people and I’ve always found working with them very easy and enjoyable,” he says. “You don’t always get that with other famous people.”
