Finance Minister Katy Gallagher has taken a swing at former Labor Senator Fatima Payman over a question regarding housing affordability.
One of the government's most senior ministers has taken a swing at Fatima Payman over a simple housing question in a tense back-and-forth after the rebel senator broke ranks with the ALP last month.
Ms Payman pressed the Finance Minister on the issue of foreign investors buying up large numbers of homes and driving prices beyond the reach of everyday Australians. “It’s a very similar question to the question that Senator Roberts, One Nation asked me earlier in the week about foreign ownership of housing,” the Finance Minister said.
“It's a very small part and it's often thrown out there as a cause of housing pressure for Australian people to buy into housing. It is simply not the case. We need to build more housing in this country and that’s what the government will do.” Ms Gallagher accused the independent senator of changing her position on the help-to buy scheme before confirming the government would not change negative gearing arrangements.
