Prime Minister Keir Starmer has mourned the loss of his younger brother, Nick, who passed away on Boxing Day at the age of 60 after a battle with cancer. Nick faced numerous challenges throughout his life, including learning difficulties stemming from complications during his birth. Despite these obstacles, he persevered and worked in various trades. Starmer fondly remembers his brother as a courageous and optimistic individual who touched the lives of many.
The prime minister said his younger brother was “a wonderful man” who “met all the challenges life threw at him with courage and good humour”.
He later gained a technical qualification and worked in scrap cars and scaffolding, but he struggled in life. His lifelong health problems made it difficult for him to hold down a job long term. Speaking of his brother’s experience, he said: “The whole thing is so poignant … Nick has had a really tough life. So that dream our mum and dad had for us hasn’t come true. There’s this real, deep sadness in me about that for my brother, and for them.”
