Sir Keir Starmer has published his tax return covering his period as Labour leader
, revealing he paid on average 33 per cent on his total income over the past two years.
The Labour leader’s statement shows he made capital gains of £85,466 in the financial year 2021/22, on which he paid £23,930 in capital gains tax. It said the sum reflected his share of the capital gains when his sister decided to sell a house he had helped her buy. That was on top of his £126,154 annual income for being an MP and Leader of the Opposition, on which he paid income tax.
Sir Keir published the statement after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did the same on Wednesday. Mr Sunak paid more than £400,000 in tax last year – an average of 22 per cent on his earnings.
