A woman who fatally struck two young men with her BMW as they repaired a bus on a Queensland roadside has been jailed for six-and-a-half years. But the judge’s decision to allow Kelly Renee Liddicoat to apply for parole in two years’ time has been described as “disgusting”. Liddicoat, 45, was found guilty last year of causing the deaths of bus mechanics Lleyton Bartlett, 22, and Aaron Pitt, 25, on Nambour Connection Rd at Woombye on the Sunshine Coast in April 2022.
“She should not have been behind the wheel,” Crown prosecutor Rebecca Marks told the jury. “She drove dangerously that day and caused the death of both men.” Witnesses had also heard a loud thud before both men were flung into the air. In sentencing on Tuesday, Judge Michael Williamson KC said he did not accept that Liddicoat was remorseful of her actions. He also said it was implausible that she was not aware she was impacted by her prescription medications at the time of the crash.
