Kelly Ripa says it’s hard for her to read books after writing her own. “All I think about is how the author must have been riddled with self-loathing through the process, or how they were up at night thesaurus-ing words.”

When Kelly Ripa embarked on her first book in 2020, she wasn’t worried at all. “I have the opposite of impostor syndrome,” she says. “I think that because I enjoy doing something, because I enjoy reading, I can write a book.”

But once she got started, that confidence began to dwindle. Fortunately, she had a Rolodex full of published-author friends to call on for motivation and advice. When deadline anxiety crept up on her, actor Alan Cumming “told me that he was four years past his deadline,” Ripa says. In a moment of doubt, she turned to actor and former White House staffer Kal Penn: “I said, ‘I’ve been dreaming that I walk in front of a bus and I get hit by it.’ And he goes, ‘Oh, that means you’re almost done.
