The mayor, for his part, must invest in CPD. Recently, the dialogue in many cities has provided a false choice — either invest in policingneed to occur. Investing in our communities — education, job training, mentoring and wellness — is key to building future generations that are free from crime and violence.First, CPD needs to recruit nearly 2,000 police officers. Priority must be given to attracting, and retaining, the best people to serve as Chicago’s guardians.
Third, CPD must use the very best in equipment and technology. Chicago is the third largest city in the United States, and holds the second largest police department, yet their equipment and technology lags behind other cities, resulting in some of the lowest case clearance rates in the country.
