Kevin Harvick's Stewart-Haas replacement is Josh Berry.
back in January. That left a vacant seat for a potential lead driver at Stewart-Haas Racing, an operation that has been led by either Harvick or team co-owner Tony Stewart since its creation in 2009. Now, we know the seat will go to Josh Berry, a relatively unproven former Late Model star.
Berry, who is relatively old for a modern NASCAR prospect at 32, has been at least a part-time driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for JR Motorsports over two separate stretches since 2014. He finally broke through to win his first race in the series in 2021, following that victory up with four more wins in the past two and a half seasons.
With Hendrick Motorsports drivers Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman both hurt at different times, Berry made his Cup Series debut as a relief driver for the flagship Chevrolet team earlier this season. He scored three top tens in eight races, headlined by a second-place finish at Richmond.
As a major Cup Series rookie with so many years racing late models before his NASCAR career began in earnest, Berry's age stands out as unique. The new SHR driver will be 33 when he joins the series. While Cup Series rookies in their 30s were not unusual in earlier eras, today's NASCAR ladder prioritizes youth.
