Targets for waiting times on cancer treatment missed in 98% of NHS England areas in January
Just two out of 107 NHS areas met the key cancer waiting time target in January, Sky News analysis has revealed.
More than 66% of people in Birmingham, Manchester and Thurrock, in Essex, had been waiting longer than two months when they started treatment in January. A report on the NHS's handling of cancer, published today by the Commons Health and Social Care Committee, said"the single most effective way to improve overall survival rates would be to diagnose more cancers earlier."A lot of the official NHS data on deaths from cancer have not been updated since before the pandemic, but on one measure for which we have 2020 figures - the number of under-75s dying from the disease per 100,000 - there is a clear geographical trend.
Nine in ten people diagnosed with Stage 1 bowel cancer in England survive for at least five years, whereas nine in ten die if they are diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer, meaning the cancer has already spread to another organ. Stage 1 means the cancer is still small and hasn't spread anywhere else. What is the NHS doing to fix the problem?
"Currently the NHS is estimated, on a full-time equivalent basis, to be short of 189 clinical oncologists, 390 consultant pathologists and 1,939 radiologists, and will be short of 3,371 specialist cancer nurses by 2030.
