As Bangladesh looks for a new leader after the former prime minister quit and fled the country following weeks of violent protests, a few key names have begun to emerge, including one of Sheikh Hasina's greatest foes.
Bangladesh stands at a crossroads following the dramatic resignation of prime minister Sheikh Hasina , after a weeks-long campaign of civil disobedience led by students.
Ms Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh's founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has long been a formidable force. But over time she became more authoritarian, accused of suppressing dissent often by mobilising state authorities, including a notorious paramilitary unit whose leaders have been subject to international sanctions for allegations of torture, extrajudicial killings, and forced disappearances.
That left a power vacuum in the BNP, where her son Tarique, who also faces corruption charges in Bangladesh, serves as vice chairman. Student protest leaders wanted him to take the position, and he also met with military chiefs before the announcement.
