Organ transplants have declined for the first time in more than a decade as lockdowns and COVID restrictions made it difficult to get consent and match donors with recipients.
“There was concern about severely immunocompromised patients being particularly vulnerable [to COVID-19] in the weeks after a transplant,” she said. Professor Kate Wyburn, president-elect of the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand and a nephrologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, said
“We would like to see more people register. The more people who register, the more hope it brings for people who are waiting,” she said. “There’s no question that receiving a transplant during a pandemic added its complications and hardships, but at the same time receiving an organ is such an amazing gift,” Lucas said.
