Despite a government spotlight on juvenile crime in WA's Kimberley region, youth crime prevention programs like Together We Ride are struggling to continue due to a lack of steady funding.

As the afternoon sun moves across the mangroves, a group of young Indigenous boys and their mentors are gathered, ready to go crabbing.

"The goal is to try and get all that pent-up stress and energy and anger and everything that's happening within themselves and just kind of get rid of that," he said."What we want to try and achieve is just to get them to be open, honest with us, and we'll be there for them." But the future of the program is now in doubt, as initial pilot program funding from the federal Attorney-General's department runs out.One participant, Chaz, 12, said he didn't know what he would do without the program.Men's Outreach Service youth programs coordinator Kevin McKenzie says the prospect of TWR ending is "scary" for participants and mentors.

"We're doing these projects to benefit our young people, our future generations, and at least a little bit of support to have a program that's been running very well ."Ms Kogolo said there were "too many changes in government", making it difficult for communities to constantly adjust to new systems, approaches and target areas.

The framework could then assess how early intervention youth programs create huge cost savings across departments, he said.
