Charles and Camilla will visit Kenya following an invitation from President William Ruto on the 60th anniversary of his country's independence from Britain.
Buckingham Palace has announced the King and Queen will complete a state visit to the East African country at the end of this month.
The King’s Deputy Private Secretary, Chris Fitzgerald, said: “His Majesty’s first visit to a Commonwealth nation as King is therefore to the country in which Queen Elizabeth II’s reign began, having acceded to the throne in Kenya in February 1952.“King and Queen visit France amid hopes of strengthening relations with UKThe late Queen was famously on a royal tour in Kenya, at the Treetops resort, when she was told of her father’s death in February 1952.
Mr Fitzgerald said: “The visit will also acknowledge the more painful aspects of the UK and Kenya’s shared history”, including he said the “Emergency” period from 1952-1960. The initial attacks by Mau Mau fighters were brutal, particularly on civilians who were sympathetic to the British.
