Analysis: King Charles kept up his political reputation with pointed reference to food banks in his Christmas message

December 25, 2022 3:10 pm

He continued: “I particularly want to pay tribute to all those wonderfully kind people who so generously give food or donations, or that most precious commodity of all, their time, to support those around them in greatest need, together with the many charitable organisations which do such extraordinary work in the most difficult circumstances.”

But there is no denying that the growing number of food banks, and the increase in referrals to them for families unable to afford the essentials, has become a hot political issue. He was perhaps more reminiscent of an archbishop than a monarch in his willingness to flirt with the political, albeit without making his own views explicit or recommending any particular course of policy action. Some may wonder whether the King wishes he could follow the example of Justin Welby and speak out against the Rwanda deportation scheme – a policy which Charles is said to have privately criticised.
