The Royal Australian Mint is due to begin production of coins with King Charles on them by the end of this year.

Labor Minister Andrew Leigh confirmed the news while speaking with ABC Canberra on Tuesday morning, saying the Mint had begun work on a “range of things” ahead of the slated production date.

Existing coins with Queen Elizabeth on them will continue to remain in circulation until they are recycled due to wear and tear, according to the Mint. “And then they’ll just substitute in dies with the King’s effigy, and so they’re familiar with doing this,” he added. This is in keeping with tradition, as the new Sovereign faces in the opposite direction to their predecessor in the profile portrait depicted on Australian coinage.
