King Harald V of Norway has been taken to hospital with an infection ahead of the Christmas holiday.

The monarch, 85, is in ‘stable condition’ at Oslo’s Rikshospitalet after he was admitted to the hospital earlier day.

The Norwegian palace said in a statement: ‘The King has been diagnosed with an infection which must be treated with intravenous antibiotics and will therefore remain at Rikshospitalet for a few days.’ The news comes after a busy start to the month for the King after he attended a number of Christmas church services, and also inaugurated the Double-Track Express train line between Oslo and Ski.He has undergone a number of operations in the last few years
