A new piece of fan art sees Hawkeye’s Kingpin get the Disney treatment via a Mickey Mouse-inspired comic book cover. Marvel Studios’ latest series, Hawkeye, just dropped its final episode on Disney+ on December 22. The series follows Clint Barton and his super fan/mentee Kate Bishop as they come into conflict with the Tracksuit Mafia, Maya Lopez/Echo and their boss, Maya’s “Uncle.” In Hawkeye episode 6, Daredevil’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin makes his official MCU debut.
In 2019, Netflix canceled all of its Marvel TV shows, including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Ironfist, Punisher, and Daredevil. Despite their mature nature, Netflix’s “street-level heroes” all referenced the larger MCU, but not vice versa. Given the beloved status of Marvel’s Netflix shows , fans were left to hope that one day the Defenders and Punisher would be introduced to the MCU, with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and D’Onofrio’s Fisk being at the center of this conversation.
Hawkeye’s finale leaves it unclear as to whether Netflix’s Daredevil is canon within the larger MCU. While Kingpin’s appearance in the series is comic book accurate and powers him up, he still seems to have his father’s cufflinks. What's more, D’Onfrio’s performance remains largely consistent with what he did in Daredevil. Many have wondered how Disney/Marvel Studios will implement newly acquired characters from mature IPs including Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Netflix’s characters.
Both Kingpin and Daredevil have connections to Echo in the comics. Although Hawkeye implies Kingpin’s death, it seems more likely that he’ll appear in the Echo spinoff series along with Cox's Daredevil. As evident by D’Onfrio’s performance in Hawkeye, Kingpin can work in an age-appropriate outing. Still, a Disney approach to already-established, dark characters will continue to be a fickle endeavor.
