A knock on the bathroom door saved Leisel Jones' life when the pressures of elite swimming had become too much. She's now detailed how a 'toxic culture' and generational shift changed her view on the sport.

In 2011 she had planned to end it, and was sitting on the floor of a hotel bathroom in Spain with a box of sleeping tablets. It was only a knock on the door from her coach that stopped her going through with the attempt. "I think too, I snapped out of a very selfish view of the world that it was all about me and everyone cared about what I was doing and everyone cared that I was winning."

And while she was still only in her mid-20s, Jones says she struggled to form the same connection with the younger generation of athletes who were now her teammates.
