Former Australian tennis star Jelena Dokic believes Alex de Minaur belongs among the top four contenders for the Wimbledon men’s singles title.

The former world No.4, who famously reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals as a 16-year-old qualifier in 1999 before making the semi-finals the next year, stopped short of predicting a de Minaur grand slam breakthrough, but said he was strongly in the mix.

De Minaur, 25, is one of nine Australian men and two women guaranteed to be in the main draw at the All England Club, with 17 more in qualifying, including James Duckworth, Li Tu and Alex Bolt advancing to the second round. He won his second grasscourt title at ’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands barely a week after upsetting Daniil Medvedev duringDokic said the world No.

Dokic said de Minaur’s improved physicality and the belief he had gained from consistently beating top-10 rivals, including Djokovic when he was No.1 at this year’s United Cup, was the catalyst for his ascent in the rankings. Dokic considers Tomljanovic a “dark horse” to make another deep run at SW-19 despite a limited lead-in after uterine surgery in February.
