Tennis: Alex de Minaur has been downed by Novak Djokovic in the Quarter-Finals in Monte Carlo.
Alex de Minaur downed by Djokovic | 01:45A decision by Thanasi Kokkinakis to take a step back over the past week has secured his immediate playing future at the top level and reaped a reward likely to net him at least $200,000 over the next couple of months.
With the rankings cut-off for the French Open slated for April 15, Kokkinakis entered an ATP Challenger event in Sarasota last week knowing he needed to win the title to ensure his spot Paris in the second major of the year. “I guess Nick and I will have something new to chat about,” Kokkinakis told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.Kokkinakis pocketed $17,200 for his work over the past week, which is vastly inferior to the $1.5 million Stefanos Tsitsipas earned on the same day when winning the Rome Masters.
He has 98 ranking points to defend leading into the French Open _ the champion in Bucharest this week earns 250 points _ which positions him well to play Wimbledon as well. The win by Kokkinakis, who won the Adelaide International last year and also has seven titles at Challenger level, means Australia will have at least eight men in the main draw at Roland Garros, barring any injury misfortune over the next six weeks.
James Duckworth fell short of a similar last-gasp bid for direct entry into Roland Garros when beaten in the semi-finals of a Challenger event in South Korea on Saturday.
