Sam Konstas made a remarkable debut in the Boxing Day Test, showcasing his batting prowess against Indian bowlers.
Not even Sam Konstas could have foreseen how his Boxing Day Test debut would unfold, in an experience even he himself describes as “surreal.” The fourth-youngest Australian to ever play Test cricket was in a league of his own on Thursday morning, and instantly joins Travis Head as the only batter this series to beat Bumrah for an extended period of bowling.
Nonetheless, Konstas still feels that he left a lot of runs out in the middle of the sporting Colosseum after eventually being undone LBW to left-arm orthodox Ravindra Jadeja. “I was a bit disappointed with the way I got out, but hopefully we get a bit of momentum for tomorrow,” Konstas told media with a grin after stumps. “He’s a legend of the game obviously, so I was trying to put a bit of pressure on him and it paid off today. “I’m always challenging myself, trying to bring the best out of myself – so just getting that contest with him and trying to take his lines away (was important). “He beat my bat quite a few times, and I was lucky enough to get a few away – it was a great contest.” Before a ball had even been bowled in the fourth Test, Konstas was out the gates with a flash – literally sprinting out to the middle well before anyone else arrived at the wicket. “That’s a part of my routine, I always like to go out first (and) assert my dominance in a way,” continued Konstas. “I told Uzzie straight away: ‘I’m facing first ball,’; he’s so good to bat with, very calm, relaxed, and just told me to trust my instincts and back my game.” Konstas celebrates reaching his maiden Test half century on debut, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day, 2024 (Photo by Robert Cianflone/Getty Images)First seen at domestic level as a conventional, but positive opener, Konstas’ attacking flare has evidently changed in the last mont
