Moscow was forced to resume a deal allowing safe passage of Ukrainian grain, after Turkey and the United Nations pushed ahead with shipments without Russia.
. But as the shipments continued this week – with a one-day interruption on Wednesday – despite Russian warnings they could be in danger, Moscow’s leverage appeared limited.
Andriy Yermak, head of the office of the Ukrainian president, said: “In geopolitical terms, what happened in recent days is the beginning of an end of Russia’s years-long blackmail diplomacy.” The UN welcomed Russia’s move. The sudden return to the deal came after days of intense diplomacy by Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who spoke by phone with Mr Putin earlier in the week.
