Australian spin bowler Matthew Kuhnemann's outstanding performance in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka has been overshadowed by concerns raised by match officials about his bowling action. Kuhnemann, who emerged as Australia's leading wicket-taker, is now facing mandatory testing and a potential ban from ICC-sanctioned matches.
Fresh off a stunning Test series victory, Australian spin bowler Matthew Kuhnemann has found himself in hot water after match officials raised concerns about his bowling action . Australian cricket authorities are reportedly reeling from the news, and Kuhnemann is now facing mandatory testing, likely at Brisbane’s Centre of Excellence, within the next few weeks.
News Corp reports that these tests will be meticulously analyzed by a bio-mechanist who will then present their findings to the International Cricket Council (ICC). Kuhnemann recently underwent surgery to repair a fractured thumb on his non-bowling hand before the Sri Lanka series. After proving his fitness, he emerged as Australia's leading wicket-taker, clinching 16 wickets at an impressive average of 17.18. His teammate and legendary Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon even hailed him as the bowler of the series for his remarkable performance. This sudden report has taken local cricket officials by surprise. Kuhnemann, who debuted in 2017, has a history of playing in five Tests, four One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 124 professional matches without any previous bowling action concerns. According to official rules, bowlers are allowed a maximum 15-degree bend or flex in their arm. However, if the angle exceeds this limit, the action is deemed illegal. Kuhnemann will now be sidelined from ICC-sanctioned matches until the ICC clears his bowling action. In a statement, a Cricket Australia spokesperson said, “The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter. Matt has played 124 professional matches since his debut in 2017, including five Test matches and four One-Day Internationals. He has played 55 Big Bash League games since 2018. This is the first time in those eight years of professional cricket that his action has been questioned. Cricket Australia will liaise closely with the ICC and independent experts in line with ICC regulations. No further comment will be made by Cricket Australia or Matthew until the matter is resolved.” Channel 7 cricket expert Bharat Sundaresan described the situation as “very intriguing,” adding on X (formerly Twitter), “(Curious) to see if the trademark locking of the wrist creates an optical illusion of flex — as some have suggested — or if there is indeed something more to it.” It remains to be seen whether Kuhnemann will be allowed to participate in Sheffield Shield matches for Tasmania during the investigation.
