The Chancellor padded out his inherently defensive speech by repeating many of his lines from his mini-Budget
This was a speech that was more trite than contrite, more flip than fiscally convincing. There was no expression of regret, only the smirk of someone insulated from everyday anxieties. Kwarteng’s description of the past 10 days of market chaos as “a little turbulence” was meant to be ironic but came across as breathtakingly dismissive.
. That’s perhaps no surprise, given that Kwarteng had used up all his bullets in his “mini-Budget” – and used several to shoot himself and his party in the foot.
