The capital's mayor says the situation could become dire during the cold winter, urging residents to prepare emergency supplies of food, water and clothes and to be ready for a quick departure.

abc.net.au/news/kyiv-preparing-for-apocalypse-scenario-belarus-troop-movements/101747012Kyiv's mayor has warned of an "apocalypse" scenario in the Ukrainian capital this winter if Russian air strikes on infrastructure continue.Vitali Klitschko says the capital might lose power, water and heat supply and the city lacks shelters

The city faces fresh challenges this winter as Russia regularly pounds Ukraine's power grid with missiles. "If electricity supply continues to be absent while outside temperatures remain low, we will unfortunately be forced to drain water from buildings," he said. However, he said there was presently no need to evacuate as the city only had a 20 per cent power deficit and conditions remained stable.Asked what items the city needed most at present, the mayor said "a new air defence system".

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who relied on Russian troops to put down a popular revolt two years ago, has allowed his country to serve as a staging ground for Russia's invasion of their neighbour.
