'Everything becomes about money first and last. Mbappe is emblematic of that.' JohnnyTheNic
Kylian Mbappe is up for sale. The 24-year-old is valued at around 180 million Euros and he’s been used to picking up around £650,000 per week, so you’re going to need the help of a nation state, some petro-dollars or both of the above to buy him.
He is apparently prepared to rot in the reserves for a season to get a free transfer to Real Madrid and a £160million signing-on fee, so PSG need to flog him now with Al Hilal, surprise surprise, being prepared to turn on their money hose. Kylian is apparently a practising Christian. I hope he’s familiar with Mathew 19:23-24.
That’s not to say he isn’t brilliant at what he does, but surely the relationship between money paid and what a player brings to a team isn’t infinitely elastic? There has to be a law of diminishing returns. And perhaps more existentially, we have to question whether this is what sport, what football is really all about?
PSG – a hollowed-out Qatari-owned basket-case of a club – is widely seen as vaguely laughable and as having traded what roots they did have – formed in 1970, fan-owned for the first three years and won just two Ligue 1 titles before 2012 – for the Qatari Sports Investment riches. It is a good example of that very modern phenomena where you can win your domestic league year in and year out and not really have anyone’s respect. Quite the opposite.
