Queensland is running out of cattle brands and some producers waiting up to six months for a new brand, prompting a government review on how livestock are identified.

abc.net.au/news/queensland-reviews-future-of-cattle-branding/101939778When you think of sentimental family heirlooms, a branding iron may not be front of mind for most people. It was registered by her grandfather Monty Atkinson in the 1940s when he was developing the Droughtmaster breed.

There are almost 70,000 three-piece cattle brands registered in the state and almost 14,000 symbol brands. In Queensland it is difficult to find combinations that are not already registered and available, which has prompted the government review. The department is consulting with Agforce to update the old legislation, Brands Act 1915 — which underpins the brand system — and update the IT technology used with the register.

"People feel very strongly about having a brand and having attached themselves … [to] a breed of cattle, or that sort of thing," he said.
