On the eve of the Wimbledon final Nick Kyrgios has lashed out at a former champion for their repeated criticism of him and revealed the only Australian player who has continually stood by him.

The 27-year-old Canberra native has played himself into his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon where he came to blows with the media questioning his conduct along the way.

“They haven’t always been supportive – and they haven’t been supportive these two weeks. So it’s hard for me to read things they say about me.” Australian tennis legend and former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash has repeatedly criticised Kyrgios’ behaviour telling the BBC: “he’s brought tennis to the lowest level I can see”.

Kyrgios explained to reporters the criticism was uncalled for and revealed Lleyton Hewitt is the only former Australian player who has consistently shown him support. “I’m definitely the outcast of the Australian players. He knows to keep his distance and let me do me. He sends me a message now and then, ‘keep going’, literally that’s it, just ‘well done, keep going’.”

Cash – who won Wimbledon in 1987 – said his comments are “fair and reasonable” while Kyrgios claimed the majority of the male Australian tennis alumni are against him.
