Before last fall, Simpkins was an artist known around L.A. Growing up as a mixed kid in Portland, Simpkins was hyper-aware of race. “I don’t think that there was ever a day when I was younger that I wasn’t aware of race,” she says. “Like it was something that I thought about constantly.”
