Its original version was a scene of many a film and TV show, but this weekend, L.A’s rebuilt Sixth Street Viaduct begins a new chapter.

The City of Los Angeles does a test lighting on the $588 million Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project Friday night in Los Angeles, CA. July 8,2022. Its the largest bridge project in the history of Los Angeles. It is funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the California Department of Transportation, as well as City funds. The design of the new bridge, known as The Ribbon of Light was created by HNTB and l bridge built in 1932.

Finishing the project — funded by Federal Highway Transportation Administration, Caltrans and the city of Los Angeles — took years longer than anticipated and the final cost was well above original estimates. Delays during the pandemic didn’t help much either. Toward the end of the bridge, leading into Boyle Heights was an array of vintage cars paying tribute to Los Angeles’ Lowrider scenes.

Marroquin and Cumplido, both from the Latino Equality Alliance, expressed how they believe this bridge truly brings two communities together, metaphorically and physically.
