Marisa Alcaraz is vying for the District 6 seat against candidate Imelda Padilla in the June 27 runoff election.
Alcaraz has developed policies to legalize sidewalk vending, promote project labor agreements that support the hiring of union workers, and a “ban the box” policy to bar employers from asking job applicants about their criminal record.
Many of the policies Alcaraz has worked on have supported union workers, and she’s talked about the need for livable wages — a reflection of her upbringing. That impression, she said, lead her to “the concept of giving back and also building the housing that we needed and understanding that not everyone was as fortunate as I was to have that home stability.”prevention program, to the city.is one of their priorities and have spoken of the importance of investing in parks and other quality-of-life issues.Both are young, educated Latinas who were born and raised in San Fernando Valley.
Padilla, in a separate interview, noted that while the two have advocated to raise the minimum wage, the roles they played differed. Padilla said that as a community organizer, she worked with community groups, neighborhood councils and other stakeholders outside of City Hall whereas Alcaraz drafted policies while employed in City Hall.
