La Mirada gets timely hitting and solid pitching in a shutout victory over Thousand Oaks in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

LA MIRADA — For La Mirada baseball coach Jimmy Zurn, there are few things more important than executing key situational hitting plays, especially in the playoffs.

La Mirada advances to Tuesday’s second round. The Matadores will be home against Havard-Westlake, a 3-2 first-round winner over Los Alamitos.“Nine hits … is a lot for playoff baseball, and we work on situational hitting a lot,” Zurn said. “We had runners on third twice with less than two outs — we got them in both times. We took advantage of runners in scoring position today.”

Freshman Aiden Aguayo drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rudy Gonzalez hit an RBI chopper into right field, scoring Aguayo and giving the Matadores a 3-0 lead. Equally as impressive as the Matadores’ performance at the plate was their nearly perfect performance on the mound. Junior Eric Jeon, a Columbia commit, and freshman Paul Dominguez combined for a two-hit shutout.Dominguez finished the game, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing one hit.
