Labor has dismissed calls to cancel PwC’s existing government contracts despite slamming the consulting giant for its “absolutely outrageous” conduct over the tax policy leaks.

The Senate Economics Committee uncovered emails in May which are alleged to show former partner Peter Collins had shared government policy around a crackdown on tax avoidance, after it was revealed in January that he was deregistered by the Tax Practitioner’s Board.

Greens Senator David Shoebridge has also urged the Department of Defence and the Australian Federal Police to cancel their existing contracts with the firm. “Now I know people would like us to go around cancelling existing procurements contracts,” Ms Gallagher said.Following Senate Estimates last week, the Finance Department updated its procurement rules effectively banning government agencies from engaging PwC.Labor Senator Deborah O’Neill, who sits on the Economics Committee, said it was a “very significant step” and showed the government was taking “necessary careful action… to prevent this egregious behaviour”.

“That would be very irresponsible of a government to do… being in government requires you to act in a careful and judicious way because you are governing for a nation.” Ms O’Neil went as far to suggest PwC should be blocked from all future contracts until the names were released.“Without naming the names, no one in the entire economy and no one around the world who is interacting with these people knows who they’re dealing with.
