Government picking a fight on medivac bill: Labor | Sky News AustraliaShadow Minister for Employment Brendan O’Connor has called on the government to work with Labor to find a compromise on the medical evacuation bill before parliament.\n\nOpposition leader Bill Shorten will negotiate with crossbenchers today to pass three amendments to Independent MP Kerryn Phelps’ bill.\n\nChanges include giving the Home Affairs Minister greater discretion to refuse medical transfers for sick asylum seekers, making the timeframe for transfer decisions less restrictive and limiting the changes to people housed on Manus Island and Nauru.\n\nThe Coalition has indicated it will not support the Phelps bill, meaning Labor will need the support of six of the seven crossbenchers to pass the bill.\n\nMr O’Connor says the Coalition is ‘fighting for its life’ and more concerned with ‘picking a fight’ than working to find a compromise. \n\n
