The Albanese government has confirmed it will pause further changes to the National Construction Code until 2029, after criticising the opposition for making a similar proposal. The Albanese government has confirmed it will pause further changes to the National Construction Code until 2029.
The decision comes after the Economic Reform Round Table flagged changes to construction red tape to address the national housing crisis. After the 2025 scheduled updates to the 2,000-page code are finalised, no further changes will be made until mid-2029, except for essential safety and quality matters. Housing Minister Clare O'Neil confirmed the announcement on Sunday, as well as plans to fast track approval for 26,000 new homes under the EPBC. "I think the biggest issue we've gotten in the code at the moment is just sheer complexity," Ms O'Neil told Sky News Sunday Agenda. "We've got a national construction code here, which has become unworkable for our builders. You know, there's no simple tool to use it. It's much too long, much too complicated" The Albanese government has confirmed it will pause further changes to the National Construction Code until 2029. Picture: NewsWire / Nadir Kinani Shadow treasurer Ted O'Brien told Sky News Sunday Agenda that the Albanese government had stolen the Coalition's policy and claimed it as their own. Labor had previously criticised the Coalition for promising to freeze the National Construction Code for a decade. “Labor made this decision in advance. They had to call a round table to provide cover for the fact they adopted coalition policy,” Mr O’Brien said. “The Coalition went to the election calling for freezing the national construction code… Labor opposed that.” The next round of construction code changes had been due in 2028, but the pause means any additional reforms will be delayed for at least a year.During the pause, the government will also explore ways to make the code easier to navigate, including through the use of artificial intelligence. Treasurer Jim Chalmers had flagged the changes after he wrapped up his three day productivity round table. “We've asked Clare O'Neil to see where we can reduce complexity and red tape in the National Construction Code,” he said on Thursday.“You know that this was raised with us in the lead up to the Roundtable as well. And so we were able to do some work. We've asked Clare to do that work relatively swiftly.” The changes are part of a broader package of measures the government is pursuing to boost housing supply.
