Labor wants to grow local manufacturing and increase demand for batteries.
The federal government has begun work on Australia’s first national strategy to boost the manufacture and uptake of batteries, aiming to stimulate local construction to accelerate the country’s energy transition.for net zero emissions by 2050 and a 43 per cent reduction over 2005 levels by 2030, which will require a huge increase in renewable energy generation and storage.
“Our general approach should be one where if we mine it here, we should make it here,” Mr Husic said.“Large-scale uptake and manufacture of batteries will be vital in transitioning to net-zero. New battery capacity will help support grid scale capacity, power our homes, and electrify our transport sector.”.
Boosting manufacturing of batteries would allow Australia to capitalise on a lucrative new industry and maximise returns from its large amounts of critical mineral deposits.innovation and research capabilities. By drawing on these strengths, Australia can take its place in the profitable global battery supply chain,” Mr Husic said.
