A former adviser to Julie Gillard reckons there are as many as nine seats that could go either way in Victoria.

Victorian Liberal Senator David Van confirmed the party’s Victorian strategy meant that if Liberals could hold Chisholm and take back one of Corangamite, Dunkley or McEwen, it could stop Labor forming majority government.

Angry protests over lockdown in Melbourne earlier this year could be a factor in outer-suburban seats.“I spend a fair bit of time out in the outer suburban seats. Corangamite, McEwen we could pick up. I’m not sure on Hawke, but Holt I think is a strong chance, and Dunkley is winnable,” he told the“In Holt, Anthony Byrne’s personal vote was quite strong, and he had held it for over 20 years, so he had a loyalty factor built up. Incumbency is a real benefit,” he said.

“The pandemic has really shaken up society and politics, and how that manifests in voting on election day is yet to be seen. There is a lot of anger in the outer suburban tradies, your so-called ute man,” he said. But the impact of the pandemic and rise of independents had created “huge uncertainty” about the result.
