A federal Labor MP has repeatedly dodged questions about the government’s support for an Indigenous treaty, just days after the Voice to Parliament was defeated in the polls.
Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister, Patrick Gorman, appeared on ABC’s Q+A on Monday night, where he was asked by an audience member about the Australian public’s support for a treaty with Indigenous people.
“I just want to get clarity because this is important … Are you saying that you think that the result you got was against the whole Uluru Statement?”Mr Gorman responded by saying he didn’t believe the Australian public had voted against the entire Uluru Statement; which contains the Voice, Treaty and Truth through the Makarrata Commission.
“How I put it is this, there is broad agreement that the current system is broken, there is not yet broad agreement on the path.”
